Meet the nutty Tennessee Republicans trying to kill police reform in Nashville
radleybalko.substack.com
On the same day the Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel Memphis state Rep. Justin Pearson and Nashville state Rep. Justin Jones, the Tennessee Senate waged its own assault on the state’s two largest cities. By a 26-5 vote, the body passed a bill that would force both cities to dismantle the civilian boards that oversee and investigate their police departments.
I’m very glad you took time to highlight this issue that flew under the radar during the other nonsense going on in the TN legislature. Quick note: Wilson County is immediately east of Davidson County.
Thanks so much for your incisive writing. I first learned of you from watching a Thursday NIght Bulwark Zoom, and I recently listened to the audio version of The Cadaver King and The Country Dentist. The miscarriage of justice stories in that book are stomach knotting.
I'm disappointed in the community. Black cops participating in that CRAZY level of violence.... because it PAYS well. Those cops know damn well their conduct is ONLY acceptable when it's done to THEIR OWN. ONE is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Has the Fraternity put out a statement condemning one of their own?? Has the Fraternity tried to strip their membership??
Those Black officers shouldn't be able to get "a glass of water or the time of day" in our community.
What the actual F$@k??
The TN legislators will get their way so the only remaining recourse is for those black officers to feel some shame, embarrassment and a Black community who rejects them ON SIGHT.
No doubt all those freedom-loving gun owners in Tennessee are polishing their barrels in preparation of stopping this tyrannical abuse of power by TN Republicans...

Yikes. Every time I think Florida is the worst, some other state says "Hold my beer".

Thank you for this excellent piece. The thought of a nationwide movement to create civilian oversight boards is inspiring.

The dynamic between blue/purplish cities and red states is fascinating.
Good to know about the members of the Tennessee Legislature who are busily helping to destroy democracy locally.

Thanks for the humor! This information can be so disheartening; it really helps that you lighten the mood here and there.
Your descriptions of the legislators are high comedy, man. Yeesh.
Good read and belated congrats on the well deserved award!
