This is happening because--despite real resistance from millions of ordinary citizens--the wealthiest and most powerful among us have signed on with Mr. Trump.

Affluent partners at white shoe law firms; university administrators; CEOs of multi-billion-dollar corporations; heads of news organizations; bankers, private equity sharks, tech bros and traders, they have all signed on for the glories of the police state.

From Wall Street to Silicon Valley, from Jamie Dimon to Mark Zuckerberg, the men who could have stood up against the death of democracy, using their immense power and influence to push back against the Republican project, instead stood up and cheered.

They see in Mr. Trump's escalating war on the constitution their own liberation from the civic burdens of democracy: taxation, oversight, regulation, equal application of the rule of law, fair business practices, honor, fundamental decency.

An excellent article Radley. I can tell you, as someone who was part of the protests here in Los Angeles, they were overwhelmingly peaceful. As so often is the case the violence was started by the police themselves.

Keep in mind cops voted for Trump at higher rates than even the military. They are the vanguard of authoritarianism in this country.

I fear this is Trump trying to get D.C. on lockdown because he does not plan to ever leave office. He is controlling ang staging forces to try and beat back any challenge to his power. He want to do a Tiananmen Square.

Anyway, sorry to plug, but please support my work and subscribe everyone. Help a struggling writer out.
